Hosta pycnophylla is oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Japan. Dr. Fumio Maekawa heeft deze hosta voor het eerst beschreven in 1976. H. pycnophylla is o.a gevonden op de Japanse eilanden Oshima (de berg Genmei) en Yashiro. Dit is dus inmiddels een klassieke, maar schitterende hosta. H. pycnophylla heeft heel veel zaailingen voortgebracht. Japanse hosta. Wordt veel door veredelaars gebruikt. Gegolfde bladrand. Blad aan de onderkant wit. Rode stelen.
